Taking my Time

It took me an entire year to quit smoking. I would quit for a few weeks & wear a patch… then something stressful would happen & I’d buy a pack. I’d ration it out: 3 squares/day until the pack ran out. Then I’d see how long I could go without a pack. Sometimes it was weeks, sometimes hours. My last pack was in July of 2007. One could say it doesn’t seem like enough time has elapsed since that last cigarrette for me to consider myself quit, eh? When you consider the difference to my lungs; compare the last year to the 20 years prior… even at 3 cigarrettes/day… consider this: that comes to 6,205 cigarettes I did not smoke last year! So, call it whatever you like. I call it success.

 What does this have to do with wieght loss? Here’s where I think it gets really deep & freaky & interesting. I’ll let you know what I think, if you’d like to know. But, what I really want to know is, what you think.  What are the parallells? What are the differences? Have you had a similar experience? Meaning, have you ever felt successful in your own eyes without much affirmation from the rest of the world? Weight gain and loss is easy to assess. Everyone can tell whether or not you’re having a “good” year :). Please tell me (and all of us) about a time when you felt you’d succeeded in your weight loss plan even though weight wasn’t coming off as quickly as you’d have liked.

Better than ice cream…

Hello everyone (or anyone):

This is my first blog. Stop reading now. You are wasting your time.

Wednesday I attended a Weight Watcher’s meeting as the guest of my tennent, Kay.  She was happy to have some company, however, the bouncers @ the door & the Nazi “leader” warned me up-front that I would need to decide that very night whether or not to join, i.e., give them access to my bank account.  I can only assume they are protecting their super-secret, magic formula for calculating “points” which is patented under U.S. Patent 6,040,531 and readily available and reads as follows:

p(c,f,r) = \frac{c}{50} + \frac{f}{12} - \frac{\min\{r,4\}}{5}

Where p is the number of points, c is the number of calories, f is the grams of fat, and r is the grams of dietary fiber (if the dietary fiber is greater than four, use four). The POINTS value is always an integer, with fractional values rounded to the nearest point. (An alternative format, mentioned in the patent and used on some websites, rounds values to the nearest half-point.)

So there it is.  Fiber-good. Fat-bad.  I did not join but I do recognize the long-term life-style changes and social support necessary to weight loss & maintenence.  I’m a little foggy on whether I need to pay for them.  Here I am on BuddySlim which is FREE & here’s what I’m going to do today.  I’m going back to the physical therapist who helped strengthen my upper back after a car accident.  He’s encouraged me to use his equipment any time for free. There is social support and   a treadmill/weight room. Did I mention that will be FREE?

I am also going to eat an entire pint of Ben & Jerry’s Low Fat Frozed Yogurt throughout the day any time I feel like a sugar rush. With my other 1,000 calories, I’ll eat regular food. I’ve lost a pound already. I do not know the weight watchers point value of a pint of frozen yogurt. Can someone get back to me on that?? You guys rock! & good luck today.
